From The Cover1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London's most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better...--Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, April 1814My Review:Well, wow! What a great read. I love it when an author can take me from hating the hero in the first chapter to adoring him by the last, and that is exactly what Julia Quinn did with Anthony, eldest of the Bridgerton children. After his fathers death at age 38, and his uncles death which also came at an early age, Anthony is certain he too will die young. For this reason he has lived his life, forming no attachments to anyone other than his siblings and his mother. As hes nearing his 30th birthday, he decides he needs to take a bride and sire an heir. But knowing (or thinking he knows) that he will die young, he has decided to choose a bride he is certain he will never fall in love with as he believes that would make his certain death too painful for himself to endure. This is where he drove me nutty. If you look up the word martyr in a thesaurus, Anthony Bridgerton would be listed as an alternative word. There came a point when I was hoping he would go frolic in a bee infested field of heather. *Blushes* I guess that was rather harsh, but by the end of the book I wanted to bring him home and love him all better. All in all, I enjoyed The Viscount Who Loved Me so much more than Daphnes story in The Duke and I which felt one dimensional to me not nearly as deep a read. Both the hero, Anthony, and the heroine, Kate Sheffield, were such wonderfully complex characters that I found myself wanting to truly understand why they were as they were to feel what they felt; fear, anger, longingthankfully Julia Quinn developed them so fully that I was able to do just that, and connected with them both on a deep level, making me care for them and hoping for the their happily ever after.
