Well, this looks weird.

I really enjoyed parts of this novel, particularly her reminiscing about what life was like in Francos Spain and during the war. The fact that it was hard to tell what was meant to be real and what fantasy added a sense of tension, almost the kind I feel when watching horror movies waiting for the scary parts to start. It is a very feminist work, talking a lot about avoiding the constrictions of being a good middle class girl - Im super curious about the Social Service she talks about having to complete as a student. The first 25 or so pages were a bit off putting, because it was hard at first to determine if the narrator was a man or woman, old or young, and I was thinking it would all be passages of impossible to understand dream sequences, but thankfully that wasnt the case. I think in a lot of ways I far would have preferred a more conventional narrative about life under Franco and how war affects a child, because I think it was the novelty of that subject that I enjoyed most.

This book is good, but could have been way better. The original postmodern narrating style just didn't do anything for me.

It's not that this was a bad book or anything, but it was difficult to follow. There were so many flashbacks without any warning, or old dialogues just popping up in the protagonist's head, that you never really knew what was actually happening (between C. and the man in black), flashback, or just random sentences going through her head. I understand that the point of this book is to blend the line between reality and fantasy, which I did enjoy, I just think a reason why I was a little more lost than I should have been was because I was reading it in my 2nd language - Spanish.
